Giving
So much talk of giving these days and weeks to come.
And what to give?
Are not connection, respect, and understanding, what most people really long for?
Such simple gifts.
We already know how to give those,
though sometimes we seem to forget our own wealth.
Those gifts are always quite literally right at hand.
For some, a touch on the shoulder, or forearm.
For others, an open palm brought tenderly to our own chest:
“What you say lands in me and finds a home.”
Sometimes a simple glance of recognition . . .
As the poet Rumi put it:
“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase “each other” doesn’t make any sense.”
